Okay fellow drag enthusiasts, we have a lot to unpack about this episode. A bizarre musical challenge, a strange choice in guest judge, and a head-scratcher of an ending.
And of course, embeddable tweets! Starting with this summary from the home team…
I don’t think Episode Four made any sense.

But we’re getting ahead of ourselves. For the main challenge, Ru asked the girls form three teams and write lyrics, record, and then make a video parodying one of her songs. Helping the girls is Ru’s longtime producer and musical collaborator Lucian Piane. For the runway, Ru, Michelle, Ross, Lucian, and special guest judge Jessica Alba watch as the girls do a salute to the color green… (Yes, Michelle makes this face a lot but I was shocked that Ru went there.) I actually like the fact that Ru and company mixed up the music challenge this year by forcing the queens to generate their own material. To be sure, it’s considerably harder than what they’ve had to do before, but parody songs are big right now. For example… But enough chatting with former alumnae of the show. Let’s chow down on some Chick-Fil-A and judge these bitches… “Tan With You” (Miss Fame, Katya, Pearl, and Trixie parodying “Dance With You”) Compared to the other two, this was the weakest of the three videos. To be sure it was good, and it had some great moments from all the girls (Fame can sing, but holy balls does she need help), but it was lacking when compared with the other two videos. Katya was brilliant in the challenge, which goes to prove that you don’t need to be the greatest singer in the world but you have to be game and fun and it will go a long way. Pearl reminded me of Jennifer Coolidge without any self-awareness. It was an awkward performance, but the runway was inspired. As for Trixie’s critiques, I’m torn over them. On the one hand, I get that they want more from her, but on the other, she’s been consistently delivering. “Get Ready To Clock” (Jaidynn, Max, and Violet parodying “Sissy That Walk”) This was a strong group in terms of concept and execution. The concept of parodying the top three of last season was inspired (and props to the show’s editors for making the video look like the original. The biggest surprise for me was Jaidynn who nailed her impersonation of Bianca Del Rio; not only in the look but also in the physicality and the facials. Jaidynn was on my short list, but what I think held her back from the win was that the runway has been seen from her before. The only weak link the video was unfortunately Max, who had the unenviable task of trying to make Courtney Act funny. Michelle was right in that she should have pushed it farther and played “the drag version of Courtney.” As for Violet, her Adore was okay, and it was kind of perverse having someone who can’t carry a tune impersonate one of the better singers to come through RuPaul’s Finishing School For Wayward Girls, but her runway look was inspired. “I Got Paid” (Ginger, Kandy, Kasha, and Kennedy parodying “Let The Music Play” – not to be confused with the iconic ‘80s song) Of all three parodies, this was probably the most on point. A good parody should sting a little and holy shitballs (to quote dear Mrs. Kasha Davis) do these bitches go for the jugular. If this was a team challenge, hands down this would have won it for me. Kennedy surprised me with a strong performance and a gorgeous gown on the runway (a little pageant-y to be sure but still beautiful. Ginger gave a strong performance and a so-so runway, but I am continually amazed at how well she dresses her figure. Kasha was a little too shtick-y for my tastes in both the challenge and the runway, but she is a smart queen and can answer the judges’ criticisms head on. As for Kandy, her contouring has improved but she’s still lifeless, especially compared to the big personalities she had to go up against in her group. In the end, Kennedy wins, which will I will chalk up to having a stronger singing voice than Jaidynn or Katya. They, plus Ginger and Miss Fame, get to relax. Max, Kasha, and Violet are safe, and Pearl is in the bottom two. What’s surprising is that Trixie is there with her instead of Kandy, and frankly I think this was the wrong call. As improved as Kandy has gotten, Trixie and Pearl have more to offer as queens. So Pearl and Trixie are tasked to Lip Sync For Their Lives to Blondie’s “Dreaming,” and both girls delivered in spades! The great thing about Blondie’s music is that it’s bubblegum pop on the surface (which is right up Trixie’s alley) and has dark undertones underneath owing to the group’s punk background (which is perfect for Pearl). And both ladies give two very different, yet very valid takes on the song. This is an ideal Lip Sync For Your Life in that the song works for both performers and it’s a nail biter all the way through to the end. So strong were both girls’ performances that I was expecting Ru to say, “Shante. You both stay”… …except when she told Trixie to “Sashay. Away.” While this is nowhere near the shock of Pandora Boxx getting eliminated in Season 2, it’s still a shocking choice. While I do think there’s more to Pearl than she lets on (though she had better show us more immediately), I think we’ve seen all there is to see from Ms. Ho. Of course the internet is up in arms over this elimination, including this tweet from a devoted fan of Ms. Mattel..
And so it is a sad sashay for poor Trixie Mattel, but I have a feeling she is going to be just fine…
Enough chatting, onto…
Here’s the Breakdown: 4 points for the winner, 3 for both Katya and Jaidynn, 2 for Fame and Ginger, 1 for the other safe girls, 0 for bottom three, -1 for “Shantay, you stay,” and -2 for “Sashay. Away.”
And the glamour toad is leading the way, with our beloved local gray lady nipping at her heels. We now have a clear top seven; in scoring order – Ginger, Max, Jaidynn, Kennedy, Fame, Violet, and Kasha, The big disappointment is, unfortunately, everyone’s favorite Russian, which makes me sad as she gives the best confessionals in the show.

– As a bonus track, here is a familiar face singing a familiar song:
NEXT WEEK: It’s the fifth episode which means it’s time for Snatch Ga… what? It’s not time?!! HOW COULD YOU RU?!?!?!?
